Having played the Yellows last week it was the Blues this week but despite a loss Rovers didn’t come away green with envy at the Blues’ style of play. Despite sitting second in the league the home team are effectively a long-ball team and the ball spent so much time in the air this week that it was difficult for Rovers to get into their natural passing game. The Blues’ other effective tactic was not to give the opposition any time on the ball to pick out a pass, and this stifled Rovers’ more creative players to the home side’s advantage.
Rovers found themselves 2-1 down at half-time, the Blues scoring from two early punts down field and Belinda pulling a goal back with a back post header from Rachel’s corner. The second half saw Rovers apply more pressure on the home team but unfortunately they were unable to find the back of the net. In fairness though their plight was only hindered by one of the worst refereeing displays of the season by a consistently poor referee.
So the greens’ last league game of the season ended in defeat but Rovers should not be disheartened that the result did not go in their favour. There is lots to be positive about looking forward to next year and with the likely re-structure of the league Rovers will be looking to build on this season’s progress and mount a decent promotion challenge in 2011-2012.
Players’ player of the match – Kath and Alison McG. It was too close to call this week so it’s a share of the spoils for Kath and McG who are two of Rovers’ most tenacious (and difficult to play against!) players. Kath was solid at the back snuffing out the threat posed by the Blues’ potential tricky left winger, and McG broke up play up in the centre of the park and got forward to support the attack whenever possible. Well played Kath and McG.
And well played to every player, whether you have contributed one minute or one thousand and eighty minutes to our league campaign this season
