Rovers’ recent improved performances finally bore fruit, in the shape of three important league points against a team they were unlucky to lose to a few games ago. Despite starting quite well Rovers went behind in the first ten minutes from a long-shot and for a few moments coach Graham must have feared the worst! But the greens knew there was a long way to go and they dominated possession in the first half, pressing high up the pitch to try to keep the home side in their own half. This tactic paid off when Belinda equalised following up Amanda’s shot in the six-yard box, to force the ball over the line, shortly into the second half.
Nat had a good game in midfield, giving her opposite number little time on the ball and scoring a cracking goal early in the second half, spotting the keeper off her line and lofting the ball over her from 25 yards-plus. Rovers continued to press and created a number of chances – mainly goal mouth scrambles – following crosses from wide positions. The home side were creating very little by this point despite the game still being finely balanced at 2-1, and Rovers’ superior fitness levels seemed to be paying off. The third and fourth goals came courtesy of Belinda’s good movement up front and her having an eye for goal, the fourth goal putting the result beyond the Yellows.
So a good performance from Rovers who were happy to have got that winning feeling back after some unlucky recent results. They have one league game left and if results go their way the greens could finish second in the league. But maybe that is an aside, they should make sure they concentrate on securing the next three points first and foremost, and if they do manage to better last season’s fourth place finish it will be a mark of the progress they’ve made this term.
Players’ player of the match – Belinda. Worked hard up front to get on the end of any balls played into the box, and was in the right place at the right time on at least three occasions to claim her first Rovers hat-trick. Well played Be.
