Coach Graham asked Rovers for a better performance this week following last week’s shocker, and he got one; Rovers were switched on and supportive of one another from the outset. Vixens are an improved side from last year having seemingly benefited from teams that have folded, and they caused the defence a few problems early on, mainly through their tall and pacy centre forward; however Alison McG, Sarah and Izzy put in some good challenges alongside Cris at the back to try to nullify her impact. It only took fifteen minutes or so for Rovers to blot Vixens’ copybook and make the most of their possession in what was lovely passing move. Cris brought the ball out of defence and fed Nat who exchanged passes with Cameron; Chloe received the ball on the right wing and after beating the full-back for pace, lobbed the keeper from outside the box. Rovers enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half, Cam and Amanda both going close. Vixens equalised midway through the first half but Nat reinstated Rovers’ lead from a corner, placing the ball high into the left hand corner to give the keeper no chance.
Vixens made changes at half-time and applied more pressure in the second half, Katri being called upon to make a couple of smart saves. This pressure paid off and they equalised after an hour or so - Rovers did not let their heads drop though, seeing this as a good opportunity to end their recent winless run. Amanda and Cameron got through plenty of running up front all game and Amanda squared the ball across the box on 75 minutes for Chloe to beat the keeper and put the greens ahead for the third time in the game. Unfortunately Vixens equalised with five minutes to go and there was no time for Rovers to take the lead for a fourth time.
So despite coming away with a point Rovers were disappointed it was not all three, but they should take heart from a much improved performance and go into the coming fixture with confidence.
Players’ player of the match – Chloe. It’s difficult to write about yourself objectively, so I’m not going to attempt to... Apart from to say that after a great passing move that started in defence flowed through midfield, Rovers’ first goal went something like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsBm2EvRaog (or so I like to think – ha ha!). Well played everyone.
