Every other game for Rovers this season seems to have been against Wythenshawe having faced them four times, and in their last meeting of the campaign the home side gave the league leaders a run for their money with a good performance. Employing the same 3-5-2 formation that brought so much joy in the last game against Wythenshawe, the Rovers’ defence gave the two tricky forwards very little time and space and until they broke the deadlock, the attackers were getting visibly frustrated. After going one down Rovers’ heads did not drop and Rachel poked home the equaliser from close range after a free-kick from Amanda.
Wythenshawe took the lead again with a superb strike from the edge of the box that Katri could have done nothing about; they were applying the pressure by this point and extended the arrears midway through the second half to make it 1-3. Rovers kept plugging away though and Amanda reduced the deficit with what is fast becoming her trademark twenty yard free-kick, and from a fairly difficult angle. Rovers believed they could get something from the game by this point but time was fast running out, and Wythenshawe were handed a dose of good fortune when the ball deflected onto one of their player’s faces and into the net to leave Rovers a bit too much to do. Amanda scored her second of the game in the final minutes.
Rovers now have five winnable games left in the run-in and should be expecting three points from each of them to end the season on a high.
Players’ player of the match – Newman. Strong in the challenge, commanding in the air and along with Kath gave Wythenshawe’s two tricky forwards very little room all game. Well played Newman.
