Rovers have had an up and down few weeks - brilliant one week, the opposite the following week; before kickoff coach Graham described recent performance as ‘Jekyll and Hyde’. On a quagmire of a pitch Rovers entertained the Yellows for the first time and in the first half the greens were very much Dr Jekyll, dominating possession and passing the ball as well as they were able to given the conditions. The Yellows’ defence was fairly disorganised and it didn’t take long before Rovers punished them; Amanda couldn’t quite meet a cross from Chloe on the right, but she was able to return the favour and play it back into the box for Chloe to slot the ball under the keeper. Rovers had lots of possession in the first half and a number of one-on-ones with the keeper that they really should have buried to put the game beyond Stockport.
The second half started in much the same vein, Rovers again creating chances they just could not finish off; Amanda, Chloe and Lorna all going close. However as Rovers pressed for the second, they got caught on the break and the away side were able to reduce the arrears with fifteen minutes to go. And then the unthinkable happened; Stockport scored the winner with minutes left on the clock. Perhaps Mr Hyde had reared his ugly head again...and so it ended 1-2.
Football can be a cruel game and Rovers created enough chances in the first half alone to win this game by a comfortable margin. But it just goes to show, if you don’t take your chances you’re likely to be punished, and so it proved to be. But Rovers can take encouragement from the fact that they were missing a number of regulars this week but still looked like a cohesive outfit, and played very well in periods. Now to bounce back next week against the old foe from Wythenshawe.
Players’ player of the match – Alison F and Chloe. Fletch sprayed the ball about well in the middle of the park with her good range of passing, she also put a shift in defensively and looked to link up with the attackers wherever she could. Well played Fletch. Chloe...er...it’s a bit weird writing about oneself, so perhaps somebody else would be kind enough...
