Until yesterday Rovers had only every lost to Wythenshawe, in three seasons of trying they had never quite managed to match them. With the away team top of the league and top of the league cup table, one might have expected another 7-2 trouncing for the greens. But yesterday was different, so Wythenshawe found out much to their surprise.
Coach Graham decided to revert from the usual 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 formation, Cris employed as the sweeper which reduced the effectiveness of the away team’s pacey forwards. The opening exchanges were fairly even but Rovers could have gone a goal or two up when square balls across the box weren’t met by anybody to apply the finishing touch. However, neat link up play between Niamh and Cameron up front paid off after twenty or so minutes when Niamh curled the ball round the keeper from roughly ten yards out for her first Rovers goal. Rovers added the second not long after, Ellie providing the vital touch from close range following a goalmouth scramble. Wythenshawe knew they had a game on their hands by now and hit the crossbar shortly before half time to remind the greens that there was still a long way to go.
Rovers started as they meant to go on in the second half and were duly rewarded when Rachel broke her scoring duck for the season with a 25 yard screamer. By this time the rain was lashing down and Wythenshawe were giving the referee a hard time about the poor state of the pitch – Rovers didn’t seem to mind it! Cameron scored the fourth and fifth, very similar finishes for both, slotting home neatly passed the sodden Wythenshawe keeper and Chloe also came on to score two more; both assisted by Belinda down the right.
So that was that, 7-0. 7-0! It’s fair to say that before the game Rovers had been concentrating on not losing to Wythenshawe, who on their day are a very good side, as the tables illustrate. On this showing though, if they play with this level of confidence every game, Rovers will feel they can be a match for anybody.
Players’ player of the match – the whole squad. This may be slightly unconventional, but a number of votes went to all fourteen players so it seems only right that everybody gets a share of the spoils this week, it was after all a remarkable team effort. Well played ladies.
