Rovers’ performance was a vast improvement on the disappointing cup game against Wythenshawe the week before. Macclesfield are right behind Rovers in the league so the players knew that it was important not to let the Cheshire side close the gap, and they made their intentions clear from the off, attacking with intent. The breakthrough came when a deep corner from Rachel was dropped by the keeper and Belinda was in the right place at the right time to prod home after a goalmouth scramble. Whilst Macclesfield are a well organised side, they didn’t create much going forward on Sunday and Katri – who kicked well all game – was not forced to make a save of note in the first half. Rovers’ second goal was a specimen of good passing and spreading the ball well; starting on the right wing, the Greens worked the ball well across the pitch culminating in a fine ball from Kath to Ellie on the left, who finished with no mistake.
Macclesfield came out of the blocks with intent in the second half, and had a great deal more possession in Rovers' half, though they still did not create many clear-cut chances. Rovers could have extended their lead had Belinda’s shot gone in and not hit the bar and had Niamh’s weaving run led to a goal, but Macclesfield pulled a goal back with ten minutes to go. A perfectly executed header dipping under the bar...from Rachel, as she attempted to clear! To make matters worse, the home side were awarded a penalty in the dying minutes when Alison F handled the ball in the area, though she knew little about it, and despite Katri’s best efforts in Finnish, she was unable to put the penalty taker off.
So it finished 2-2 and Rovers felt unlucky not to have come away victorious, but on reflection a point away to one of your nearest rivals is a point well won.
Players’ player of the match – Alison F. It was a close one this week but Fletch just shaded it with a solid performance at the heart of the Rovers defence; she was strong in the tackle and distributed the ball well when in possession. Her good positional sense meant she was also in the right place at the right time to make a headed goal line clearance in the second half. Well played Fletch.
