For the second season running Rovers were drawn against City in a cup competition, this time the County cup. Last season’s result went in favour of a very strong City side who play several tiers above Rovers so anything less than the 20-0 of last year was to be seen as progress. City currently sit top of the FA Women’s Northern Premier League having won all seven league games so to get anything from this game was going to be a very tall order for the Greens.
However, before the match coach Graham emphasised to the players that there was no pressure on them and to just go out and try to enjoy the game. Despite being 9-0 down at half-time, Rovers never gave up and matched City for effort and hard-work, in the end though the gulf in class was just too much for Rovers to cope with. At the final whistle Graham told the players that that was likely to have been the hardest game they will ever play in, and to be proud of themselves and not dwell too much on the score line.
Rovers have now got a few weeks off from the league to concentrate on more cup competitions, and to focus on trying to win some silverware of their own. Well played Greens.
Players’ player of the match – Janey. It was a baptism of fire for Jane who was playing her first ever match for Rovers. She was impressive between the sticks though, making a string of fine saves and demonstrating real bravery when faced with a barrage of City attacks. Well played Janey.
