What was technically an away fixture ended up being played at Rovers’ Hough End home after Saturday night’s torrential rain rendered Saffron’s pitch unplayable. Sunday’s weather wasn’t much better which meant the pitch was greasy, perfect for Rovers’ passing game! Amanda had an eventful first half, scoring a twenty minute hat-trick and then donning the goalkeeper’s gloves when a finger injury prevented Newman from continuing.
Rovers went ahead within the first five minutes, Amanda meeting Chloe’s low cross in the six-yard box, too quick for the keeper. Rachel returned to the midfield this week partnering Nat, and between them they dominated the midfield for almost the whole ninety minutes, protecting the defence and looking to get forward and support the forwards. Rovers’ second goal could be an early contender for goal of the season; Amanda struck a lethal shot from outside the D, high over the stranded Saffron keeper. As a warning against complacency though, Saffron hit back shortly after with a good long range shot on the break – 2-1. With Saffron potentially dangerous on the break Rovers were never comfortable with only a one goal lead. The third was similar to the first, Belinda teeing up Chloe on the right and fox-in-the-box Amanda on hand to supply the finish from the incoming cross. The first half drama did not end there though, Saffron scored straight from the re-start; a quick break and their left-winger lobbing Newman from a good twenty yards. Perhaps an area for improvement for Rovers is concentration, but a good first-half all in all.
The second half was spent almost entirely in Saffron’s half with the ‘home’ team offering little in the way of attacking threat. By the hour mark Rovers were peppering the Saffron goal with long and close-range shots, their keeper making some good saves. Rovers’ fourth and final goal came when Saffron failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to Nat who kept her composure to place the ball just inside the keeper’s left hand post from twelve yards.
Rovers seem to have a different mentality this season and come off the pitch disappointed with anything less than a win these days. They also have a much stronger squad than in previous seasons and even with regular players missing, newcomers such as Kate, Cameron and Belinda have filled in superbly and added real quality to the squad – evident this week in defence. Another toughie next week – Wythenshawe Amateurs...
Players’ player of the match – Nat. She worked tirelessly in the middle of the park, tracking back and getting forward to join in attacks whenever possible. Well played Nat.
