Rovers continued their 100% winning start to the season against a determined and hard-to-break-down Vixens side. In the end though it was a convincing win and it could have ended with a far greater Rovers’ scoreline but for some good saves by their keeper and one or two Ronny Rosenthal-esque misses from those in green! Rovers welcomed two more debutants this week, Katri and Belinda who both slotted in nicely to their respective positions.
The game started in a similar fashion to last week's against Barr Hill; Rovers bossing the opening exchanges and making their intentions clear from the off. This week’s strike force of Cameron and Belinda were being fed well by balls into the box from the wingers and good link up play with Nat and Alison in midfield providing balls for the strikers to run onto. Rovers’ pressure paid off after about 20 minutes, Chloe’s corner from the left reached Ellie at the far post who slotted past the keeper for her second goal in as many games, and relieved some pressure. Whilst Rovers were dominating possession though, Vixens did have one or two chances themselves on the break; however Amanda always had a safe pair of hands in goal and was never really called upon to make any vital saves. Her job was made easier with the new central defensive partnership of Cris and Katri protecting her well and making some timely interceptions.
Rovers’ second goal came not long after the restart, another corner from Chloe was met by Nat in the six-yard box to increase the deficit and register her first goal for the club. Vixens made changes in the second half resulting in their most creative player being employed in defence and as a result, far fewer Vixens chances. By this stage Cameron and Belinda working well together and being supported by Alison and Nat behind, had created a string of chances and it was only a matter of time before one found the back of the net. Cam broke free on the left, cut inside and followed up with an unbeatable strike after the keeper had parried her first attempt – 3-0. Hayley came onto the left-wing for Ellie around the hour mark and provided fresh impetus to the attack. The game was wrapped up when she struck a beautiful dipping shot from the left-wing over the keeper and in at the far post.
Another good performance and good result for Rovers who are now sitting pretty at the top of the league (is it a little early to be getting carried away!?). Their toughest test so far this season awaits next weekend away to Saffron Offerton.
Players’ player of the match – Cris. A solid display from the captain who organised the defence effectively and in unison with the rest of the defence protected Amanda well in goal. Well played Cris.
