Rovers got off to a great start to the new season with a comprehensive win over opposition that had beaten them 19-1 only two seasons ago, and it could have been 1-10 to Rovers but for some early-season rustiness. It was a sunny but windy day, Rovers playing with the wind in their favour in the first half. Rovers started well enjoying some good link up play down the right hand side and always looking to feed the new strike partnership of Amanda and Cam. The early possession paid off not long into the first half, Cam dropping deep to pick up possession and send Chloe away on the right wing, she crossed the ball low into the six yard box and Amanda slid in at the far post to poke the ball past the keeper (followed by a very dubious goal celebration!). Despite Rovers dominating possession, Barr Hill managed to pull a goal back shortly after. It is fair to say their striker didn’t know much about it though – their attackers broke quickly and an edge-of-the-area punt managed to bounce unfortunately past Newman on a bobbly pitch into the back of the net.
In previous seasons Rovers’ heads might have gone down after being pegged back but they regrouped, started to dominate possession again and were pinning Barr Hill back into their own half within minutes of the re-start. Rovers’ and Amanda’s second goal came following an in-swinging corner from Chloe; a goalmouth scramble ensued and Amanda was on hand to bundle the ball home from close range for her second of the game. Rovers were really taking control by this point, the defence being well protected by Alison McG and Nat and plenty of attacking thrust coming with midfield and attack linking up well, as Barr Hill struggled to get out of their own half. Another Rovers corner was not properly cleared and this time the ball fell to Alison F on the corner of the area, she kept her composure to hit a lovely half-volley which nestled in the bottom left hand-corner for her first ever Rovers goal. A good first half, Rovers went in 3-1 up at half time.
The second half was only different in as much as Barr Hill had a lot more possession, however they never really looked like threatening Newman’s goal and the Rovers defence was strong and organised enough to deal with any potential danger; Cris marshalling with Alison F playing well in an unfamiliar position in defence, and Izzy and Kath solid at right and left back. Despite seeing less of the ball, Rovers were still able to create many chances going forward but unfortunately not able to finish all of them off.
The fourth goal came after good work from Kath and Alison McG on the left-hand side sent Ellie away on the left wing, she took the ball past a couple of defenders and managed to squeeze the ball past the keeper at the near post to break her duck for the season. Two substitutions were made with Kelly now partnering Cam up front and Hayley coming on to the left wing – Hayley’s contribution was capped with the fifth and final goal; almost at the corner flag she shaped to cross but sent a fierce low drive across the box through a crowd of players into the far corner.
All in all a good performance and a valuable three points to start the season off with. Rovers will be looking to continue the good work next week at home to Oldham Vixens.
Players’ player of the match – Cameron. A great debut and unfortunate not to have been rewarded with a goal, especially with the long-range effort that hit the angle of the goal in the first-half - well played Cam.
