Manchester Rovers 1st Team started their Manchester Premier League season with a hard fought win against Chorlton Villa this Sunday. Rovers started the game with a bang and were dominant in possession. Brandon Parker-Stone gave them the lead with a great finish.
Rovers unfortunately didn’t carry on as they started and unfortunately conceded a goal from along ball over the top in which was pounced onto by the very quick Villa striker, 1-1. Rovers however still looked good in possession and quickly took the lead again with another strike from Parker-Stone.
Lacklustre defending resulted in the equaliser for Villa via another ball over the top of our defence. Just before half time Villa took the lead after a great counter attack by Villa and an error from Masterman in which he should have cleared the ball coming across the box, 2-3.
Rovers went into half time a little demoralised after a great start to the game and things didn’t get any better as the away side took a 2-4 lead. This was when Rovers had to show some bottle. Changes were made and Rovers started believing again. Ste Fraser got another goal after a fine start to the season with a glancing header from a Masterman cross and shortly after that Paul McNeil scored a cracking volley from another Masterman cross 4-4.
Into the final 8 or so minutes Rovers were undoubtedly the better side but chances were being created by both sides and the game was on a knife edge. Goal hero for the day Parker-Stone pounced on a loose ball from a Villa defender and finished with aplomb to grab his hat-trick, 5-4.
In conclusion I think Rovers deserved the victory yesterday. Some great battle showed against a team that has been in this league for a number of seasons. A lot of things to work on as a defensive unit but going forward we look in great shape. Great effort by the whole squad, well done!
