Rovers stepped out for their last game of the season hoping to make amends for last week’s dreadful display against Staley. The manager decided to stick with the same back 4 and just made changes to the wide players and goalkeeper. Rovers started brightly and had chances to open the scoring but a poor pitch made it difficult to take the advantage. It was AFC that were given the upper hand when Paul Sanders stepped across a forward in the area. Penalty converted and Rovers went down 1-0. Rovers got on the upper hand again but a long clearance when Rovers were on the attack wasn’t dealt with and AFC doubled their lead. Then with 10 to go before the half Rovers were caught napping and AFC scored another 2 to make it 4-0 just before the whistle.
Stern words at half time and the want to finish the season on a high, Rovers came out guns blaring. Alex Pentecost beat the offside trap and calmly took the ball round the keeper to pull one back. Then Alex Pentecost was taken down in the area and Dave Lavelle slotted the penalty home to pull another back. AFC went on the offensive and scored a further 2 before Alex Pentecost added 2 more to make the final score 6-4 to AFC.
The manager said “This was a better second half performance and I only wish we could perform like that for 90 minutes. We’ve had an OK season. We’ve had some great results, we’ve had disappointing results and we had that really poor Staley result. But we can really take a lot from this season and bring it into the next. We’ve scored 76 goals, which is on a par with the top 4 clubs. We just need to do something about the 109 conceded. But like I said, that’s for next season.”
