Manchester Rovers 4 - 4 AFC Gorton
Rover’s squad looked much stronger this Sunday and with two subs we went into this game feeling confident even though we knew we would be facing a tough game against 2nd in the table Gorton.
The first half against the wind a blinding sunshine was a problem for Rovers and they went 0-2 down, although having a number of chances Rovers failed to convert until Pete Evison (returning after injury) finished with aplomb in the Gorton penalty area. The 1st half finished 1-2.
Rovers came out all guns blazing in the second half and looked the better side; creating a shed load of chances and keeping AFC Gorton in there own half for the majority of the half. Brandon Parker-Stone made it 2-2 with a looping header after a corner and Dave Harris struck well from just inside the area to give Rovers a deserved 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately Rovers then became a little complacent a conceded two quick goals to go into the last few minutes 3-4 down. Cecil then produced a mazy run into the Gorton penalty area and was hacked down to give Rovers a last minute penalty. Michael Masterman converted to make it 4-4.
A good performance which showed that the Rovers squad can compete with the better teams in this league, although a disappointing result after we got ourselves into a great position to take all three points. The first game of 2008 is definitely something to build on and I hope to see you all at training on Thursday and at the game next Sunday.
My MOM was Ross, who alongside Mike H at the heart of the defence had a superb game. Not sure who the final MOM award went to but I’m sure G will update.

Cecil (LB)

Pete E (CM)
