Rovers Fail to take Advantage!
A poor display by Rovers gave Oldham Victoria the 3 points in a dour game. Oldham took the lead halfway through the first half when a through ball caught the Rovers defence napping. Stand in keeper, Ben Harrold, saved the initial shot from the striker only for a following player to slot home. Rovers got a deserved equaliser when Oldham couldn't clear their ranks and Carl Knipe scored his first goal for the club calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner. The second half started even, but another through ball caused the Rovers defense to stop and the striker had all the time in the world to slot the ball home. Oldham went further ahead when AGAIN a similar through ball was played. The Rovers defense did their best to get back and were unlucky when the shot was saved but rebounded off a defender into the open goal. The Rovers whole team were quietened and there seemed to be no way back with players looking uninterested. But hopes were lifted when Graham Kenny pulled out an upstoppable chip to make the score 3-2. Rovers perked up and looked like the better side in the closing minutes but Oldham held out for the win.
The Manager said "I'm absolutely furious with our display today. I want this team to do well in this league and NOT just be making up the numbers for the division. We have shown in past games that we can compete with the best teams in the league, and then to go out and put a performance like that is outrageous. We have to put the effort in for 90 minutes and not drop our standard of play. We played Govan last week and played the ball on the floor, kept possession and defended courageously. I saw none of that today and I'll be wanting to see an improvement for next week! Today should have been a certain 3 points and would have pushed us further away from the bottom group. I want better things for this club, I want to compete for silverware. I do not want this club to be an alsoran! Now let's lift our spirits and start picking points off the big teams in the coming weeks."
