Rovers go Down Fighting!
Rovers didn't get out of the blocks quick enough this week. Heaton Mersey were hungry for the result from the off and this showed for their first goal when a ball over the top pressured the back line, Paul Sanders got back well but headed the ball over the stand in keeper Greg Foster for an easy tap in for the Heaton Mersey striker who looked offside for the original ball. Heaton Mersey capitalised again on the Rovers high defensive line when another through ball to a striker who again looked offside and broke through to double their lead. Rovers then started to get their shape together and after a string of chances Atu Sikanda pulled one back after Alex Pentecost hit the post. 2-1 at half time and Rovers looked like getiing back into the match, but another offside discretion early in the second half caught out Rovers again and Heaton Mersey increased their lead to 3-1. Rovers tried to battle back but could only manage a consolation with 2 minutes to go from Alex Pentecost.
The Rovers Manager said "I'm disappointed in the result. I thought we would get something out of the game but Heaton Mersey defended well. We didn't get enough shots on their keeper at any stage of the game. Greg Foster came in and did well in goal for us. We still need to improve our fitness, and we need to bond together better. We are competing well in this division but I know we can do better and I'll be looking for better performances from everyone in the next few weeks."
